Shoot From the Shoulder

November 23rd, 2011

This is my dad kayaking in the Amazon last September. I am very pleased with how this photo turned out as I wasn’t at all looking through the viewfinder. Instead, I turned around the camera and blindly took the photo over my shoulder. Note my raggedy shirt pictured in bottom left and in the top, the tip of my goofy hat.

I also like this photo because it shows how incredibly vibrant the Amazon is. I did not doctor this photograph whatsoever; no, the vegetation is actually that green. It is absolutely beautiful.

Simplicity

November 13th, 2011

I have lately been finding it interesting to shoot simple patterns. I’m not entirely sure what it is; perhaps taking a complex situation and simplifying fulfills something within. Who knows. Anywho, here are two shots from my recent trip to Peru. The first is the underside of a gazebo-esque structure at the bottom of the Colca Canyon. This other fella was taken in the midst of a fish market on the coast of the capital city of Lima. Behind this stack of colourful crates there were hundreds of small fishing boats, all of which looked like they were barely keeping afloat.

Amazonians

November 6th, 2011

Oh hello, I didn’t see you there. I was too busy looking at these swell photos from the AMAZON RAINFOREST. This first fella was taken on a beach where for whatever reason there were loads of flies, wasp like creatures, moths and butterflies hanging out. The yellow terror below was somewhere around the size of your palm. Things are bigger in the Amazon. Much of our time in the Amazon was spent in a boat, looking for birds and other creatures. Into these boats were stuffed around eight people and no life jackets. Note that this particular lake contained electric eels, sting rays, piranhas and cayman. Of course, guides failed to mention this until after I had been swimming for a good half hour. There were also bats hanging out on the side of a semi-submerged tree.

Face Me

October 30th, 2011

Oh Peru, your beat up old cars usually look pretty interesting but this time you’ve outdone yourself. I don’t know who owns this car but he (or she) is clearly awesome.

I’m Back

October 26th, 2011

I just realized I have been totally spacing on anything resembling posting on 390nm. I apologize for the few of you who actually are regularly checking this site and promise to be more vigilant in the future. Anywho, I have nowhere near gone through the 5000+ photos from my recent trip to Peru but after a brief scan here are a few that I hope you find neat.

First up is this wacky scale that was sitting in an old warehouse that fishermen had recommissioned to slaughter fish in. One may ask, “Are there sanitation issues here? This scale looks like it hasn’t been washed since the mid 1970′s.” You would give the answer “Shut up.” as nobody cares  in Peru. Now here is a delightfully spooky church in the city of Cuzco, which incidentally is the oldest city in South America.I have never really been able to properly distinguish between Llamas and Alpacas. I’m pretty sure that Llamas are substantially larger but other than that I have no clue. Since I do not have a size reference in this photo I am just going to assume that these delightful fellows are Llamas but I could be wrong. If I am, then I guess I’ll have to retire from the competitive sport of Llama spotting. And as a special bonus, here is a photo of my dad hanging out with a monkey.

Goodbye Again Canada

September 18th, 2011

So it turns out that I’m heading off to Peru for a month as of tomorrow.  I’m attempting to automate 390nm so that the posting of all these swell photos during that time is uninterrupted, but there is a chance I shall fail at this task. If it turns out I am indeed less competent with technology than I would hope, do accept my most sincere apologies for missing out on something that likely doesn’t matter in your life whatsoever.

Although I am very excited for my trip, I will be missing a variety of folk back in Victoria, not to mention the city itself. Feast your eyes upon a common sight at nearby beaches.
